Review & Description

Survivor of the destroyed planet Krypton, young Clark Kent defends truth, justice, and the American way.Superman's "never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way" on television actually did come to an end in 1957 with the cancellation of the Adventures of Superman series, but not before it completed its sixth season, which is presented in this five-disc set along with its fifth season from 1956. Story-wise, the fifth and sixth seasons trend a fine line between the "serious" tone of the first three seasons (which saw Superman take on gangsters, corrupt scientists, and other villains with roots largely planted in reality) and the more outlandish escapades of the fourth season; examples of the latter include "The Tomb of Zaharan," in which Lois Lane (Noel Neill) is kidnapped by Middle Eastern dignitaries who believe her to be their reincarnated queen; "Mr. Zero," with Billy Curtis (High Plains Drifter) as an alien pressed into illegal service by crooks; and "The Brainy Burro," which features a mind-reading donkey(!) used by nefarious types to commit crimes (the latter is one of three episodes directed by series lead George Reeves). Fortunately, there are plenty of exciting adventures on hand as well, the best of which might be "The Perils of Superman" (also directed by Reeves), which harkens back to Superman's comic book and radio serial origins in its tale of a gang of lead-masked hooligans who subject the Man of Steel and his pals to a series of cliffhanger-style dangers. It's hard to say if modern young viewers will take to these vintage escapades--the special effects remain decidedly primitive, and some of the plotlines will challenge even the most imaginative kid's suspension of disbelief--but for Superman fans and classic TV aficionados, there's still plenty of fun to be found in the Adventures of Superman.

Supplements include a charming chat with co-star Jack Larson in the featurette "Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olson," in which the still spry actor is joined by Neill, special effects expert Bob Burns, and several Superman experts (including actor Jim Beaver of Deadwood fame). A barrage of trailers for previous Superman-related DVDs, including Superman Returns, rounds out the extras. -- Paul Gaita Read more

Review & Description

The seventh and final series of the beloved All Creatures Great and Small, based on the autobiographical tales of Yorkshire veterinarian James Herriot, ended with the warmhearted humor and sentiment that marked the show's entire run. As ever, James (Christopher Timothy) wrestles with the illnesses and injuries of cows, horses, pigs, dogs, and occasionally more exotic animals, as well as the quirks and moods of the eccentric farmers and the bickering of his fellow vets, the brothers Siegfried (Robert Hardy, best known as Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies) and Tristan Farnon (Peter Davison, Doctor Who, Campion, returning to the show after an absence). Series 7 moves into the 1950s, even featuring the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Though the episodes feature all three vets, much of the fun comes from the escapades of Tristan, who's as prone to frivolous obsessions and harmless scrapes as ever. Romantic tangles are his specialty: The series starts with James playing a prank on Tristan, leading him to believe he'd drunkenly proposed to someone two years earlier; later, he becomes smitten with the pretty owner of a pet tortoise. But the show's heart lies with James himself, whose warm relationship with his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham, Second Thoughts) mirrors his passion for the animals in his care--be it an enormous sow or a neglected dog. And of course, Mrs. Pumphrey and her pekingese Tricki Woo put in an appearance. The Complete Series 7 Collection includes 12 episodes, plus the 1990 Christmas special and--a must for fans--an interview program from 2004 that reunites Timothy, Hardy, Bellingham, and the original Helen, Carol Drinkwater. Though it's the show's last series, newcomers will find it easily accessible and will swiftly grow fond of the well-developed and engaging characters. --Bret FetzerBased on the bestselling books by James Herriot, this long-running series is a perennial PBS hit. All Creatures Great and Small Series Seven wraps up the final installment of this heart-warming tale from the Yorkshire dales with James Herriot (Christopher Timothy), his wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham) and his volatile but warm-hearted partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy). Life at the small veterinary practice continues to challenge the partners, whether by neglected animals or tight-fisted farmers. But through all the trails and tribulations, the social upheavals and the years gone by, friendship and family prove themselves as strong as ever. Read more

Genre: Television
Rating: NR
Release Date: 20-FEB-2007
Media Type: DVDThis warm, comedic western appeared on televisions a year after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was a surprise blockbuster. Both lighthearted Westerns follow two outlaws who have won the hearts of the public. In TV bandit version, it's because "they never killed anyone" while being ever-so-charming as they steal from banks and trains. In the pilot episode (which aired as a TV movie in January 1971, followed two weeks later by the series), the premise is set: Hannibal Heyes (Pete Duel) and 'Kid' Curry (Ben Johnson) want to go straight when they discover the governor is offering amnesty, a historical fact. However, it's stipulated they need to go "straight" for a year before amnesty will be given. So they rename themselves Joshua Smith and Thaddeus Jones as they attempt to go straight, but lawmen--unknown of the secret deal--are on their heels. Usually the pair goes out of the way to stop a crime from other bandits. A good double-cross is usually thrown in too. Heyes/Smith is the brainier one with an eye for the ladies. Curry/Jones is more brawny (a relative term), possessing the proverbial "fastest gun in the west." Highlights of the 14 episodes includes "Wrong Train to Brimstone," as the two board a train of detectives looking for Heyes and Curry, and "A Fistful of Diamonds" where we don't know who is conning who. The revolving door of guest stars is pretty impressive. Susan St. James, Earl Holliman, and Forest Tucker appear in the pilot. Later shows find Burl Ives as a gambler, Susan Strasberg as a casino owner, Fernando Lamas as a mentor of Heyes', Keenan Wynn as a stationmaster who captures the bandits, plus Juliet Mills, Patrick Macnee, L.Q. Jones, Slim Pickens, Sam Jaffe, and J.D. Cannon, who appears in several episodes as a detective on the trail. Add those talents to the easygoing charm of the two stars, and even the thinnest story is enjoyable to watch.

This was the first show Glen A. Larson (Magnum, P.I. , Knight Rider) created and produced. His copy of the Butch formula (and the some extent, the previous comedic TV western Maverick) worked well enough for the struggling ABC network to quickly order a second season (the show was especially a hit with the younger set). However, by the end of 1971, the tragic suicide of Duel made the show a dead end, despite the addition of Sally Field and instantly recasting Smith with Roger Davis (who supplied the show's opening narration up to that point). A flash in the pan (50 episodes) seen year later holds up well enough, and has been preserved to supply an excellent picture quality. --Doug Thomas Read more

Review & Description

Genre: Comedy
Rating: UN
Release Date: 13-JAN-2009
Media Type: DVDWriters Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft managed something quite clever with this, the film version of the 1970s sitcom Are You Being Served? The idea of this cheery collection of comedy stereotypes--the pompous one, the vulgar one, the camp one, the shifty one, and so on--being confined within a department store was a master stroke, as it allowed any kind of situation to arise without the plot having to exceed the restrictions imposed by the set. How, then, to keep the same theme for the big screen without just offering the television series writ large? Simple: send the whole cast on holiday together but make sure they can't leave their hotel, a state of affairs contrived easily enough by throwing a guerilla uprising into the plot. So it is, then, that the staff of Grace Bros. descends on the Costa Plonka while the store is closed for refurbishment. There are all the usual jokes involving knickers, boobs, toilets, and gay sex (sometimes all at once), adding up to a good slice of nostalgic fun for anyone who was there when lapels really were that wide. --Roger Thomas
